Advanced Product Filtering by Price and Features

Overview

Product Filtering Example

Product Filtering Example

Patrick Simmons of Boutique Handbags wanted a way to sort products by price on his affiliate marketing website.

The website has a number of handbag products, where the details of each product are saved as a standard WordPress post. Using 3 custom taxonomies of, Designer, Colour, and Style, the user is able to filter what products that they want to see using the free Query Custom Taxonomies plugin.

When you click on a particular colour, designer or style, just the products matching your selections are show to the user. So the website visitor can quickly drill down to the type of handbag they are interested in. WordPress only supports filtering by a single tag at a time by default, so that’s why the Query Custom Taxonomies plugin was being used, to blend multiple selections.

Patrick had already set the website up with a number of products, price information, and the custom taxonomies with the filtering plugin. Patrick wanted us to extend the Query Custom Taxonomies plugin to add support for:

  • Sorting the products by price, from low to high
  • Sorting the products by price, from high to low
  • Viewing all products, ignoring the number of items per page

What we did for Patrick…

The tricky aspect was adding the price sorting functionality whilst still preserving the selected filtering taxonomies. i.e. when sorting by price, preserving the choices of colour, style and designer was particularly challenging.

We solved the problem by creating an extension to the Boutique Handbags WordPress theme that extended the functionality of the Query Custom Taxonomies plugin to handle the pricing information.

When i began to build the Wordpress theme for Boutique Handbags I knew elements of the design would be beyond the scope of my coding knowledge. I wanted to create a user friendly shopping experience that gave the customers the opportunity to sort the products by ascending or descending retail price.

The tricky part was integrating this into a third party plugin that I was using to filter the handbags by features such as colour, brand, and style. Having stumbled upon the WP Doctors website a year earlier and been extremely impressed with Dan's knowledge and professionalism,

I did not hesitate to ask for his help. His response was very prompt and to my relief he was confident that what I had planned could become a reality. Several further emails were exchanged and the cost and time involved were clearly laid out and very reasonable. The work was delivered on time and functioned absolutely perfectly! If anyone is looking for a little extra help, from coding to complete theme development, from beginner to advanced, I have no hesitation in recommending Dan Harrison as your go to guy!
